I’m sitting in the veranda of our new home in the ‘blogging chair’ (my husband’s name for it).  It’s a nice spot.  It’s separated from the rest of the house by french doors and there’s lots of windows looking out on three different sides.  The house wouldn’t have been my first choice (it’s old and has lots of wood on the walls), but it grows on me more and more each day.  Even the wood is growing on me.  Although most parts of the house are still in a semi-state of chaos and most of it left to be unpacked, it’s already beginning to feel like home.

 Today was generally low-key.  Matthew, our six year old even put himself down for a nap in the afternoon.  We’ve been going pretty hard for the past two weeks (as we didn’t rest last weekend with all the moving) and it was due time for a rest. 

 I also worked quite a lot of overtime at work this week just to get everything in place for the person replacing me (my last day was Friday).  I am now on maternity leave and it feels so good to be done.  I feel a great sense of accomplishment looking back at the past few months.  I was able to manage the busy ‘wedding season’, basically single-handedly.  Plus train new staff on top of it.  I feel like I’m leaving the other catering consultants equipped to do their jobs even though they only have a few months experience doing catering.

I realize I love training people.  If I can help them do their job better, it makes me feel very good.  God’s been teaching me more about myself through this, but I’ll write more on that later.

God is very gracious.  Change is generally very difficult for me - I need lots of time to process.  We’ve moved (after being in the same home for 7 1/2 years), I’m going to have a baby in a few weeks, and I just finished work.  But what I feel right now is peace.  I might have felt a bit stressed about getting everything in order for work, but I don’t feel stressed about the move or the fact that nothing is ready for the baby yet.  I’m just going to take it easy and enjoy my time off.

The end is near

…in more ways than one.

 Today we took possession of our new home.  We’ve got most of the packing done - there’s boxes everywhere.  Who knew we had this much stuff lurking in our home??  This Saturday will be moving day.  So the end is near for the packing end of things - unpacking will just be starting after this weekend.

As of October 28, I will be off work for a whole year.  I’m very excited about this.  I missed the year maternity leave with my last one (had to go back after 6 months).  I’m really looking forward to enjoying a full year off with our baby.

I also saw my doctor today.  I’m at 36 weeks.  She gave me “the papers”.  The papers I’m supposed to keep on me at all times just in case I go into labour.  She said the baby’s head is pretty much ‘down’, which is kind of interesting because often after you’ve had a few babies, the baby doesn’t actually ‘drop’ until you’re in labour.  This is baby number 3 for me.  Still, I’m not banking on going into labour early (my 2 boys were both reluctant to leave the womb and had to be ‘coaxed out’ / ie: labour was induced one week and one & a half weeks past my due date).  My husband says I’m pretty ‘chirpy’ about the whole ‘being late’ thing, and my doctor stressed that every pregnancy is different.  I guess we’ll see who’s right in a few weeks time.

Packing day

Today was spent packing up more stuff for our big move.  We’ve got the majority of it packed now; mostly odds & ends from this point on.  Possession date is this coming Wednesday and moving day is next Saturday, October 21.  It’s exciting to think we’ll actually be owning our own home in less than a week’s time.

 I was able to do a lot today, but now I am paying for it.  My hips and back feel like they’ve siezed up.  I’m very sore right now.  Thank goodness for electric massagers!

I’m going to fire my family doctor

Yesterday I went to see the doctor who is actually going to deliver my baby.  She was reviewing the file sent over from my family doctor.  She says to me, “I see your second glucose test came back as normal.”  What????  (the glucose test determines if I’m gestational diabetic).  I had her explain the results to me (which she explained much better than my family doctor), and yes, my results fall under ‘normal’.  The results may be close to the ‘higher than normal intolerance to sugar’ but I’m not close to gestational diabetic and this doctor told me not to worry about it.

I’m going to fire my family doctor.  I’ve been stressed out about this for a month and a half for nothing!  On top of all that, my family doctor has been saying from the beginning that my due date is November 11, but the file she sent over to my new doctor has my due date set at November 14.  Grrrr!

Not so black and white

I see the world as ‘black or white’, ‘right or wrong’.  When faced with making a decision, I tend to view it as an opportunity to make a mistake, to make a ‘wrong’ decision.  I’m constantly asking, ‘What am I supposed to do?’ I’m so busy trying to figure out what others (including God) would want me to do that I never really ask myself what I would want to do.

This past week I was faced with making a decision which involved 2 very good opportunities.  All I could see was me inevitably making a mistake and making the wrong decision.  I saw it in terms of the negative; my husband saw it in terms of the positive.  He asked me what I really wanted to do.  At first asking myself what I wanted to do did not seem like an option.  How could I consider what I wanted to do?  I needed to know what God wanted me to do.  But what if God was saying they’re both good - do what you want?  What then?

 Is it always about right or wrong?  Does God leave us with options where we get to decide what we want?  This line of thinking seemed very selfish to me (isn’t it all about obeying God so there must always be a ‘right’ and a ‘wrong’), but my husband put it this way:

With my own children, do I want them to have to ask me what to do for every single decision they make?  Don’t I want them to be able to decide what they want to do and then do it?  For example, what if they were invited to two different friends’ houses at the same time - wouldn’t I want them to be able to choose who they would like to hang out with?  Would they really need me to tell them what to decide?  Or what if they were deciding which game to play - would I make it mandatory for them to ask me first or would I let them just decide what they wanted to do?

I believe that God gives us boundaries (just as we do with our own children) and that there are times when God makes it clear that deciding one thing over another would be a good choice or a bad choice.  But I’m beginning to wonder if God gives me much more room to choose what I want than I realize.
