It’s a girl!

November 20th, 2006 by Carol

In case you haven’t heard already or haven’t read Leighton’s blog, we have a new baby girl!  Lynae Inara Tebay was born on Friday, November 17 at 5:35pm.  She was 9 lbs 13 oz at birth.  I gave Leighton quite the nasty look when I found out how big she was.  The ‘bigness’ genes do NOT run in my family line and Leighton was close to 9 lbs when he was born.

So, I have officially lost ‘the bet’.  The bet was that if the baby was born on or before 3 days after my due date, Leighton would win (mind you, with just 6 1/2 hours to spare).  He seemed to think that I was overly confident that this baby would be late and that I would have to be induced.  In his words, “Two instances (meaning David & Matthew’s births - both overdue and inductions) do not constitute a pattern.”  I have to admit I was saying all along that I would be late and have to be induced (which in fact is true).  However, this time, I started going into labour naturally (right on my due date), and only ended up having to be induced to finally get things rolling.  So I concede defeat.  I was wrong and my hubby was right.

Completely discouraged

November 15th, 2006 by Carol

I saw my doctor this evening and things have not progressed since this morning.  I’m still 3 cm dilated.  And now my contractions have stopped.  I am completely discouraged.  All these friends and relatives are anxiously awaiting this newborn (for some its the first biological grandchild) and my body doesn’t seem to want to work.  I feel frustrated and depressed. And I feel pressure to hurry up and have this thing - I know people mean well, but it’s not making me feel very good at this point.  I can’t do anything about what’s going on and I, too, would like to have this baby hurry up and be born.

I had dreams of going into labour naturally.  I would start having contractions and they would gradually and steadily progress until it was time to go to the hospital and then a few hours later, I would be holding a baby in my arms.  But that’s not how its happening.  I almost wonder if it was better not having any contractions and then being induced.  Sure I had to stay in the hospital the whole time and the whole process was more intense, but at least I could tell people we’re going in to be induced on this day and with my kids it was 8-12 hours later, we had a baby.  None of this dragging it out to eternity with all these people anxiously waiting to hear the baby has been born (and ending up waiting for days).

I know I’m pregnant and that means emotional and irrational, so things aren’t probably as bad as they seem, but its how I’m feeling at this moment in time.

Erratic

November 15th, 2006 by Carol

‘Erratic’ - that’s my word for today.

I am having contractions (they started yesterday afternoon), but they’ve been quite erratic.  Although they are doing something.  I saw my doctor this morning and I am 3 cm dilated, so there’s hope that maybe we will have a newborn by the end of today.

It’s been a bit frustrating.  Seeing as this is the first time I’ve gone into labour ‘naturally’, I’m finding this process to be taking longer than I thought it would.  With my other two, I was induced and for the most part things just progressed at a fairly steady pace.

Last night everyone was ready for us to head to the hospital.  The kids’ bags were packed and ready to head to the babysitter.  My husband was all ready to get us out the door.  The kids were super-excited.  And then nothing happened.  My contractions stayed at 10 minutes apart and when I lay down, they basically stopped.  So when I told my 6 year old this morning that there was no baby yet, his reaction was ‘psssfffttt!’

As soon as I got up and moving this morning, the contractions came back.  So, ‘erratic’ is my word for today.  Hopefully things are going to start to progress soon.  Everyone is anxious to see this baby and getting impatient with the whole thing.

Guess I should blog something…

November 13th, 2006 by Carol

So here I am, with all this time on my hands, and I haven’t blogged.  This is the start of my third week home on maternity leave.  No baby yet.  Tomorrow is my ‘official’ due date.  If I haven’t had the baby by 1 week past my due date, I’ll be induced.  I’ve been spending my time leisurely unpacking and picking up things for our new home.  Today I purchased drapery cloth to make curtains for our three french doors.  Two doors open from our veranda into the living room.  The third french door is on our bathroom.  Don’t ask me why there is a french door on a bathroom (we certainly didn’t put it there), but there we have it.  The door does have a curtain on it, but its hideous.  Oddly enough, I’m finding there are advantages to having a french door on a bathroom.  When you need to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, there is enough light coming in from the hallway light that you don’t have to turn on the bathroom light and blind yourself.  Speaking of going to the bathroom in the middle of the night, I’m not doing too bad so far.  Usually its only once a night that I have to go.

I’m looking forward to having this baby but I’m also enjoying the quiet time to myself once the kids go off to school.  I’m realizing how much I need this and how much I wasn’t getting it before.  It’s nice.  I don’t think it will be too bad once the baby comes; it will be taking naps, so I’ll still have some time to myself.  It’s been a long time since I’ve had a newborn around.  I’m feeling pretty relaxed right now, but I wonder what it’s going to be like getting back into that whole new world once again.

1st week of maternity leave

November 5th, 2006 by Carol

This week was the first week of my mat leave (well, sort of, I’ve got 2 weeks of holidays/days owed, so ‘technically’ my mat leave does not start until November 13).  It was a good week, though still fairly busy.

We transitioned the boys to a new school (we had promised them they could stay at their old school until the end of October).  There were farewell parties at the old school and registration at the new school.  Things are going well with the transition.  We thought it might be difficult for our oldest boy (change is not easy for him), but he seems to be adjusting.  I think it is helping that I am home, so he can come home for lunch and he can come home once school’s out for the day instead of having to stay at an after school program.

Wednesday was full of appointments and other engagements.  I saw my doctor - the baby’s head is down and ready to go any day now; I’m less than 10 days from my due date (November 14).  But nothing is happening so far - no braxton-hicks or false labour.

My husband and I were contemplating why my first two boys were late and I had to be induced.  Here’s our theory: Boy #1> he doesn’t like change, so he would rather have stayed in the womb.  Boy #2> he doesn’t like to work; going through labour and delivery is work, and then once outside the womb, he’d have to work to get food rather than being fed through the umbilical cord, so he would have rather stayed where he was.

On Thursday, a good friend came over and helped me do some sorting and unpacking.  On Friday, I spent the morning with CWG’s wife, and had hot chocolate and snacks waiting for the kids when they came home from school in the afternoon.  That was fun.

I’m enjoying staying at home.  There’s things like having snacks for the kids when they get home and stuff that I never could do before.  People who are stay-at-home moms might take these things for granted, but when you’ve been working full time for several years, these things, though simple, mean a lot.
