cialis indiaYesterday I went on an adventure with my boys (plus 2 others). We had tickets to go see Walking with Dinosaurs in Edmonton with family, but due to something unexpected coming up, we had to shift our plans. So I left around 8:30am yesterday morning with the car loaded up with David and Matthew plus 2 of their friends and headed off to Edmonton (hubby and the baby stayed at home). We got to Edmonton, road the LRT (light rail transit) to Rexall Place and watched Walking with Dinosaurs, which started at 3:00pm.
It was an amazing show, with LIFE-SIZE dinosaurs walking around on the floor of the arena. I never imagined the T-Rex would be so BIG (I’m glad we don’t have any of those running around now!). If your child loves dinosaurs, I would highly recommend seeing this show. It’s going to be coming to Winnipeg at the end of December this year.
Anyways, my sister (who lives near Edmonton) also came along and watched the show with us (which also helped with ‘crowd control’). After the show, we said goodbye to my sis, headed back on the LRT, picked up some supper and drove back to Saskatoon, arriving home around 11:30pm.
It was one of those crazy spur-of-the-moment adventures (I planned the details in less than 2 days) and it was a lot of fun. Our portable DVD player decided not to work halfway through the first movie so I had to think of some creative ways to keep the kids entertained (especially on the way home when everyone was overstimulated from the show), but everything worked out really well. I didn’t even feel that tired driving home and I must say that Starbucks coffee mugs are awesome. They keep the coffee hot for a long time.

Getting Things Done
At the thought of going back to work in two months, I immediately thought of “Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity” (don’t you love that title?). I’ve had this book sitting on my shelf, unfinished, for the past two years. I first heard about it when my husband visited an extremely busy pastor in Australia. This pastor swore by the system set up in this book. I’ve known I needed to read this book and implement the system, but ironically, I never got it done. The book talks about getting all the things you’re thinking about in your head out of your head in a way that you will trust yourself to be able to remember them when you need to. I carry SOO much stuff running around in my head, and as a result, I’m usually worrying about something that needs to get done or hasn’t been done, even if its something due months from now. But because this system would really help me at work and I was thinking about work when reading the book, I resisted reading it in my off-hours. Who wants to think about work when they’re not at work?! So now I’m reading the book with a vengence. I NEED to learn how to implement this system before I get to work and get bogged down with the busyness of it all. I believe it will make things easier and help me be even more organized (something you definitely need in the Catering Manager position).
The Big Cook
One of the things that sucks about working an 8:30pm to 5:00pm job is getting home at 5:30pm to try to whip something together for supper, eating at 6:30pm and then starting the process of putting the kids to bed. It doesn’t leave any time to just ‘hang out’. Plus I’ve gotten into the habit of cooking a lot of fast, overly processed food for meals because the kids like them and they don’t take a lot of time. Interestingly enough, the day I had my interview at the hotel, I saw my hairdresser and she told me about “The Big Cook“. It’s a way of creating a mass amount of meals in one day that you can freeze for future use. The nice thing about this is that when you cook up the meals, they’re fresh (and healthy). It’s not the same as cooking a casserole and then reheating it (which never tastes as good the second time around). My hairdresser said “The Big Cook” has changed her life. It frees up so much more time for your family and you don’t have to wonder ‘what are we going to have for supper?’
So I think these two books are going to be keys to my survival when going back to work full time. Just because I’m working doesn’t mean I have to miss out on my family. It just means I’m going to have to more deliberate about the time I have with them.

On Saturday, my hubby and I unpacked, purged, and sorted through the rest of our boxes from our move in October. I’ve heard of people who, a couple of years after their move, still hadn’t unpacked all their boxes. I did not want to be one of those people.
I say I survived the Great Purge because working with my husband to sort and purge has the potential to really stress me out. Our personality types are the exact opposite of each other. I am a packrat and he is not. I have to think and evaluate whether or not I will use something in the future. He is able to make quick decisions to keep or toss. I’m glad we’re able to laugh at each other. During our unpacking, I’d want to keep something and then he’d ask me “why”, I wouldn’t have an answer, I’d get flustered and finally say “Fine! Toss it.” Or he would be going through some stuff and before he’d even done anything, I’d say “don’t touch that!” or “what are you doing with that?!”. By the end of the day, I was fried! Too many decisions, too short a period of time.
Despite the stress at times, we got through all the boxes and I’m really glad about that. What took the both of us one day of sorting, would have probably taken me by myself one week. We got rid of at least half of what was in the boxes. And now we can fit everything in one storage room. Plus it’s freed up a room that I can have as ‘my space’. Yay! Progress is being made.
(and even after Saturday, I still think my husband is awesome and I’m so glad I’m married to him 
)

Since I have the summer with my boys this year, I’m planning to take them on a number of field trips (I love going on field trips and exploring new places). This past week we explored the University. I’ve taken the kids there a few times before but they always love coming back. Their favorite part is the Geology building where the dinosaurs are. Here’s some pics:
