After 8 hours of work, the rebuilding the play yard project is mostly done…mostly. I have no pictures yet but will take some when its all completed. There were a few things that caused delays, like screwing in 4 braises only to realize the bolt holes on one side didn’t match up and so I had to take out the screws, put the bolts on and then screw the braises back on (I was wishing I had experience in construction at that point - I’m sure there’s some things those people just KNOW from doing what they do all the time). The most time consuming part of the whole project was just getting all the bolt holes to match up so I could get the bolts in (there were about 20 bolts that needed to be put in). I had to find creative ways to move the wood enough to get everything to match up. So now all that’s left is adding nuts to some of the bolts (I ran out of nuts and washers), drilling screws every place there is a bolt (for reinforcement), adding the swing, the slide, and a few other small items.

The kids are excited to have the play yard back. However, trying to rebuild a play yard with an 11 and 7 year old as your helpers can be REALLY trying at times. I was hearing things like, “This is going to take forever”, “We should just give up” and “We should call dad for help” (dad was nowhere nearby - he was in another town working at a college today - and as if I’d just give up and get dad!! I was determined. Stuck at times, but not about to give up). So the comments were incredibly irritating. Especially when I was trying to figure out how I was going to get yet another bolt to line up so I could pound it in. I must admit, I lost it on the boys a few times. But generally they were good helpers and I don’t think there’s any permanent scarring from mom’s tirades.

It’s nice to see it up again. I’m looking forward to hanging out with the kids in it and taking Lynae up there. She was watching us while we were working and was quite interested in seeing this monstrosity come into being. She’s an adventure girl so I’m sure she’ll have lots of fun in it.

The office is done!

August 23rd, 2007 by Carol

office.jpg

Yesterday I organized the office. Yay! For some of you, it may not seem like a big deal to get rooms organized. Maybe your rooms are always organized or maybe it doesn’t really matter to you. But I FEEL much much better when things are organized. When I know where everything is and where everything has a place to go. In our household I am the person everyone goes to to find something, because I usually know where everything is or I remember seeing it somewhere. When things are disorganized and I know that we have a certain item but I have no idea where it is, it frustrates me.

As I’ve been working hard to get everything organized before I go back to work, I’ve found with each room and space organized I am feeling more relaxed about things. It really makes a difference for me. This does not mean to say that my house is in pristine order. lol! There are areas of total chaos. Why have I lived with this for so long? I think I need to be in the right frame of mind to do it. Plus, if it seems like a really big task, then unconsciously I feel overwhelmed and I avoid tackling it. When I work on organizing something, I tend to try to get it done all at once and I’m very thorough when I do it so it usually takes a long time (longer than it would take my husband, but at least I know where everything is).

I’m feeling more and more at peace about going back to work. I still have over three weeks left before I return and there isn’t a lot left to organize. I’m hoping to have it all done by the end of August so I can sit back & enjoy the first two weeks of September before going back.

UPDATE: David and I still aren’t finished the play yard (it’s been cloudy and raining for the past week). But there is sun in the forecast for Saturday so hopefully we can get most of it done then. Now that we’ve laid all the pieces out and started on it, it doesn’t seem like it will be too bad of a job to do.

Another room down, one left to go

August 16th, 2007 by Carol

So…

I have one month left until I go back to work (September 17 to be exact). Over the past month I have been trying to finish up some organizing projects so everything can be in order when I head back. Today I finished the boys’ toyroom. I even took pictures to document it. :) toyroom-1.jpgtoyroom-2.jpgtoyroom-3.jpg

When I took my boys down to the toyroom to see what it looks like to be able to SEE THE FLOOR, I told them I wanted the room to look like that every night when they go to bed. My youngest boy thought I should take pictures and post them on the wall of the toyroom to help them remember (too funny!).

The only room left that needs a major organizing overhall is the office. Which makes me happy. I always feel better when things are organized and I know where everything is. After the office, there are still a few ‘zones’ that need some purging and organizing (like my bedroom dresser, the shelf in the kitchen, and the laundry room) which shouldn’t take long.

However, there is yet one major project yet to be done:

play-yard.jpg

It took what felt like forever for my wonderful hubby to take this thing apart when we moved. Many of the screws were stripped so he had to take a hacksaw to them and there were lots and lots of screws in that thing (besides the huge bolts). I had spent a large portion of my income tax rebate to buy that thing one summer and it took more than a few days to put it together. I didn’t want to leave it behind. My husband still bears the emotional scars from the dismantling ordeal (which means to say he is not touching that thing) so its up to me and my oldest boy to put it together. And we’ve got less than two weeks left before he heads off to school. I’m pretty sure that if we don’t get the play yard up now, it will never be put together. I’m not going to want to tackle that monstrosity on my measly two weeks of holidays next summer, that’s for sure. So pray for us! The adventure continues…

Going away for a few days

August 8th, 2007 by Carol

Today I am off to the Partylite National Conference in Toronto. I fly out this afternoon and get back late late Saturday night. Leighton will be home with the boys and Lynae. I’m really looking forward to the conference. Anyone who sells Partylite and has gone to the annual conference before tells me that it’s an unbelievable experience and that it definitely boosts your business. Just by going to the conference, Partylite ships a whole bunch of product directly to my house! And its being held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. It’s right across the street from the Skydome and CN Tower. Wow! I know my ‘catering’ eyes are going to be bugging out. I took a look at the conference facilities on their website. It is a monstrous facility! There’s a north side and a south side with 3 or 4 levels of conference space on each side. And just one small part of one level is 50,000 square feet. That’s 5 times the size of our largest ballroom at the Saskatoon Inn. This is going to blow my mind. I’m very excited. Got to get going and pack…

Why I don’t like arts & crafts (or ‘farts & cramps’)

August 3rd, 2007 by Carol

I do not consider myself a crafty person. For relaxation you would not find me ‘creating’ something using paper, scissors, glue. Ugh!!! I shudder at the thought. I have some ‘geeky scrapbooking friends’. I tried scrapbooking once and found myself overwhelmed and frustrated. They tell me I am a scrapbooker, I just do it on my computer (I create a calendar each year for family with pictures and captions). Ahh…but the computer is much different. I’m not using scissors, glue - the computer cuts and pastes things very precisely and if I don’t like it one way, all I have to do is delete-copy-paste again. No tearing out pictures that have already been glued and making a BIG MESS.

I was thinking about all this yesterday as I was making a knight’s helmut for my 7 year old son. He received a book for his birthday about knights and medieval times and it also has a TON of CRAFTS in it to create medieval stuff. Well, he’s been wanting to make the helmut since he got the book and since he’s not able to do it himself (and because I love my son) I told him I would make it for him. So here I was yesterday using scissors (no glue was involved) and cutting and drawing and trying to put this helmut together. It turned out all right, I guess. My son really loves it. But it didn’t turn out exactly how it does in the pictures in the book. It took longer to make than I hoped it would. The cutting wasn’t perfectly straight.

I realized I don’t like crafts because when it comes to creating things I am a perfectionist. I want to be able to do something well the first time. I am very much a details person when I do something; it’s harder for me to see the ‘big picture’. So if I’m creating something, I’m lamenting about how the lines aren’t perfectly straight rather than seeing the beauty in the whole. I go over and over the same little detail trying to make it perfect and getting more and more frustrated and stressed. This was actually a good realization for me to come to. It makes sense to me now why crafts usually stress me out. And I’m ok with that. On the one hand, I don’t have to be like the ‘crafty’ people. I can use my creativity elsewhere. On the other hand, being conscious of my creative perfectionism, when I try something ‘crafty’ or ‘artistic’ I can let myself relax and enjoy the process rather than aiming for perfection.

UPDATE: Today, my son wants me to make the sword (and glue is involved!).  Argh!
