cialis indiaMy room…my retreat…my hide-from-the-kids room…
the walls are painted, I have a rug on the floor, a table in the corner with candles, a CD player playing soothing music, a rocking chair with ottoman
I’m loving my room. I love the color of the walls illuminated by candle light.
I’m not posting any pictures yet. There’s still a few things I’m waiting for before the room will be complete (mostly - I still need to install a ceiling and baseboards, but I’m not doing that now). But I’m loving what I’ve got so far.

I just finished reading the book “Flight of the Dragonfly” by Melissa Hawach. It’s the true story/autobiography of a mother whose husband (they were seperated at the time) kidnapped their two daughters and ended up taking them to Lebanon during the summer war with Israel in the summer of 2006. It was 6 months before she was actually re-united with her girls and it was two months after that that she was able to get out and get herself and the children home.
Its an incredible story. The thing that made it even more interesting is that Melissa Hawach grew up throughout Saskatchewan, finally ending up living in Saskatoon for her primary and high school years. She listed off places like Yorkton, Prince Albert, Moose Jaw, and she went to high school at Bishop Mahoney. This isn’t the true story of someone who lives in some big city in the U.S. or someone in a country overseas. This is someone who lived in my city. You just don’t think things like this happen to people who live here.
It is a very good book. I would recommend it to anyone. It was heart-breaking, uplifting, and challenging. It amazes me everything this mother went through to get her children back. And it forced me to ask myself if I would have been that determined. Or would I have succumbed to defeat and given up? (not that I have any worries about dealing with a parental abduction of my kids, but there are other forms of child abduction not involving a parent). I hope I could say ‘yes’ to those questions, but I’ve come to realize that you don’t know how you will react until you’re faced with the crisis. And I also know that God prepares us for whatever comes across our path. And He knows what is coming so he is the best equipped to prepare us in advance (although we may not know we’re being prepared for whats’s to come).

We were childless for five days (we shipped the kids off to various grandparents). It was wonderful. All families should do this. It’s good to remember what life was like with no kids. Although for us, the only other time we’ve had no kids (for more than a day) as a married couple was on our honeymoon (we were at the lake for a week). I think we should make this an annual thing. Here’s some of my thoughts:
- It’s so quiet
- Our house would be too big for us if there was just the two of us
- The house stays a lot cleaner
- Life is simpler
- It’s so quiet
- Life would be much more boring with no kids (although as my hubbie pointed out, we would just fill it with other things)
- There is more time to play “Guitar Hero”
- I can leave the house without having to make arrangements for childcare
- Life is more relaxed
- Planning for a night out is much less complicated… planning? No need to plan. We can just go!
- Did I mention its really quiet?
I really love my kids and will be happy to have them back (the youngest one is back already), but its a really nice break to take once in a while.
I’m really thankful for my hubbie. He was a bachelor for many years which means he strongly values time just by himself to think, read, write, reflect. I think for those of us that have had kids for a long time we’ve forgotten what it was like to regularly take time just for ourselves. But it really is needed (for everyone’s sanity). So because of my hubbie I’m learning to take time for myself. I feel much better when I do.

I guess I should consider myself fortunate. I work for a company that invests into its employees. Our parent company values associate satisfaction, guest satisfaction (I work in a hotel) as well as making money. They focus on training and ensuring every employee has a quarterly review for feedback and discussion purposes. They really want to know how people are doing. Management is supportive of its leaders and associates. People are approachable. I may think this because I am in management but I’ve seen many hourly associates meeting with our HR manager or talking to other managers.
Don’t get me wrong. It’s not all roses. I do not live in a perfect world. There is conflict between people and departments at times. Processes break down and things don’t run how they should. Sometimes I’m extremely frustrated with my work.
But there are times when I realize I take a lot of things for granted. I realize this when I hear of other people’s work experiences and I am APPALLED by what some employers get away with: not permitting employees to take holidays, giving people unrealistic expectations with limited training and then freaking out on them when they make a mistake, having double standards among employees - what is ok for one is not ok for another, allowing managers to use manipulation and power plays to exercise their dominance. It’s just plain stupid! How does it benefit a company to treat their employees like crap?!
I was telling my co-workers of an incident that happened to someone I know - the person’s boss actually crumpled up a piece of paper and threw it at the person (over a personal voice mail message that didn’t list a phone number)! My co-workers laughed! They tried to imagine our boss doing the same thing and the thought was so ridiculous they laughed.
Sometimes I wonder whether I live in a bubble. How much of these shinanigans go on with employers and bosses and managers? I’m sure there are places that are better than mine in terms of how they treat their employees but I am realizing that there are places a lot WORSE than mine, too. The good thing is, having the work experience that I have had, I know I wouldn’t put up with stuff like that from an employer. Either I’d quit or I’d go to Labour Relations and report them. The sad thing is that there are probably lots of people out there that don’t know that things could be better or that what their employers are doing is actually illegal.
So I will be thankful today for my place of employment.

So… I got this email from iTunes telling me about the 10K Human Race. Its a 10K race set up by Nike along with iPod that will be held in 25 cities across the globe on August 31 (but the website says you could race anywhere you are). Here comes the ingenious marketing: you can actually track your progress as you train and after the big race you can compare your results with the rest of the world. Cool, eh? Well… in order to do this you need to purchase the Nike+iPod Sport Kit, which is actually pretty cool. Here’s a bit of the description of what it does:
“Whether you’re running the Nike+ Human Race or just out for a jog, this ingenious kit works with your iPod nano to track your time, distance, pace, and calories burned. It even gives you voice feedback on your progress.”
This is sounding really cool. But wait… in order to use this you need to have Nike+ shoes. Here’s how the whole things works:
“Thanks to a unique partnership between Nike and Apple, your iPod nano becomes your coach. Your personal trainer. Your favorite workout companion.
Tune
Insert the wireless sensor inside the custom, built-in pocket beneath the insole of your Nike+ shoe, then plug the receiver into the Dock connector on your iPod nano.
Run
Now start your workout. As you run or walk, the sensor sends information to your iPod nano, tracking your time, distance, pace, and calories burned. If you choose, real-time, spoken feedback can even alert you to milestones throughout your workout.
Sync
Back at your computer, sync your iPod nano to transfer your workout data to iTunes and nikeplus.com. There, you can evaluate your performance history, set goals, and even challenge other runners to a virtual race.”
This sounds really cool. Of course, I don’t own an iPod Nano (I’ve got an iPod Shuffle), or Nike+ shoes or the Nike+iPod Sport Kit. So if I wanted to hop on board I’m looking at $159 for the Nano, at least $109 for the Nike+ shoes, and $39 for the Sport Kit, making it an investment of just over $300 before taxes. It’s actually not as much of an investment as I thought it would be when I started reading about how you’ll need and you’ll need that, etc… Which makes it that much more tempting (especially since yesterday I got a HUGE bonus cheque from work). But I will resist the temptation.
Besides… when I told my husband about this he said you could get almost all of the same training information from a GPS… which we already own.
But a GPS doesn’t sound as cool!
