{"id":181,"date":"2006-12-14T01:20:23","date_gmt":"2006-12-14T07:20:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/songofjoy.ca\/?p=191"},"modified":"2006-12-14T01:20:23","modified_gmt":"2006-12-14T07:20:23","slug":"old-fashioned-christmas-concert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/songofjoy.ca\/?p=181","title":{"rendered":"Old fashioned Christmas concert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My children now go to a public school, and that means no Christmas concert.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m guessing it has something to do with being politically correct.\u00c2\u00a0 I was thinking about this the other day and feeling sad.\u00c2\u00a0 I have fond memories of the annual Christmas concert when I was in school.<\/p>\n<p>I grew up in a small rural\u00c2\u00a0community and because the school did not have a stage in our gym, the Christmas concert was held in the town hall.\u00c2\u00a0 There was much anticipation leading up to the concert.\u00c2\u00a0 Practicing at school every day or every other day.\u00c2\u00a0 The week of the concert was\u00c2\u00a0consumed with practices, finishing\u00c2\u00a0sets, getting\u00c2\u00a0costumes ready, and so on.\u00c2\u00a0 The Christmas concert was always on Thursday night.\u00c2\u00a0 We spent that entire day at the town hall, practicing and getting everything ready.\u00c2\u00a0 Then we&#8217;d go home, wolf down supper and head back into town for the concert.\u00c2\u00a0 The hall would be packed full.\u00c2\u00a0 It was like the whole community came out.\u00c2\u00a0 The kindergarden class would start the evening off with some sort of &#8216;welcome&#8217;.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Grades 1-4 sang\u00c2\u00a0Christmas songs and\u00c2\u00a0then the classes put on\u00c2\u00a0some plays.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0The evening would end off with the arrival of Santa and the entire hall singing &#8216;Here Comes Santa Claus&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>The next day was the last day before Christmas holidays.\u00c2\u00a0 We didn&#8217;t do any school work on\u00c2\u00a0that day &#8211; some cleanup from the concert and\u00c2\u00a0watching a movie.\u00c2\u00a0 It was a lot of fun and a great way to kick off the holidays.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m really saddened that they don&#8217;t have Christmas concerts like they did when I was small.\u00c2\u00a0 My kids were in a Catholic school until we moved and they had a concert every year, but it wasn&#8217;t like the concerts I grew up with.\u00c2\u00a0 The older grades\u00c2\u00a0put on a play with the younger grades filling in with songs in between the scenes.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For me, I&#8217;ve always loved acting and every year I got to be in a play for the Christmas concert, which I loved.\u00c2\u00a0 Most years I played Mrs. Clause and my cousin was Santa Claus.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0My two boys are quite dramatic and it would\u00c2\u00a0be nice to see them in\u00c2\u00a0plays.\u00c2\u00a0 Even though it was a small school with\u00c2\u00a0limited resources, I think I had more opportunity to be involved in singing and\u00c2\u00a0drama than my kids do.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My children now go to a public school, and that means no Christmas concert.\u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m guessing it has something to do with being politically correct.\u00c2\u00a0 [&hellip;] <span class=\"read-more-link\"><a class=\"read-more\" href=\"http:\/\/songofjoy.ca\/?p=181\">Read More<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[7,9],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/songofjoy.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/181"}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/songofjoy.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/songofjoy.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/songofjoy.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/songofjoy.ca\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=181"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"http:\/\/songofjoy.ca\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/181\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/songofjoy.ca\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=181"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/songofjoy.ca\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=181"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/songofjoy.ca\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=181"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
