“Discipline in the spiritual life is the concentrated effort to create the space and time where God can become our master and where we can respond freely to God’s guidance.” – Henri Nouwen
I like this. It goes along with what I’ve been learning. It’s not about ‘mustering’ myself up to ‘BE’ a better person. It’s all about listening to God and being faithful to what he’s telling me to do.
I just came across your blog today…and I really like it!
I love all your quotes from Nouwen…he’s one of my favourites too!
…just thought I’d add a comment about what your wrote about… “It’s not about ‘mustering’ myself up to ‘BE’ a better person. It’s all about listening to God and being faithful to what he’s telling me to do.”
…I think what you describe as ‘mustering myself up to ‘BE” is really ‘doing’ versus ‘being’…doing for ourselves as opposed to letting God ‘do’…I find a reminder to just ‘be’ in the term ‘human beings’…He didn’t create us to be ‘human doings’…I’m supposed to ‘be’ who He made me to be…my thoughts for what they’re worth:)
Sherri,
I totally agree with you, and I like the reminder about human ‘beings’. I’ll have to remember that one.
