Sharing in suffering

This past Wednesday I had breakfast with a friend.  I have been having breakfast on Wednesdays with this friend quite regularly for several months now.  Her life has not been an easy one and it continues to be challenging.  There’s really nothing I can do to alleviate her situation.  But I spend time with her and I listen.  We share our experiences.  I enjoy her company and she enjoys mine. Another 40 days…

Today is Ash Wednesday which marks the first day of the season on Lent. I don’t think I’ve ever actually seriously practiced Lent (I might have given up something 10 or 15 years ago but I don’t remember what it was). My understanding of Lent is a time of preparation leading up to Jesus’ death and resurrection. While I could ‘give up’ something for Lent, that ‘giving up’ wouldn’t necessarily […] Read More

Rachel Held Evans and “The Scandal of the Evangelical Heart”

I first heard about Rachel Held Evans through my husband.  He’d bought her book on his Kindle called A Year of Biblical Womanhood and told me I should read it.  My first thought was, “As if! I’m going to read a book by that name!  It’ll probably tell me I should be calling my husband ‘lord’ and other silly stuff like that.”  Well, I read the book, and it was […] Read More

Thoughts & Insights from my “40 Days of Fun”

My “40 days of fun” was a very good exercise for me.  The idea to do it was absolutely spontaneous and completely on a whim.  It’s interesting that I’ve gained a number of insights from something I didn’t “plan” (which is what I do 99% of the time). 1. It is perfectly acceptable to “plan” fun.  Prior to this exercise I thought that “fun” equaled spontaneous.  This is not true.  […] Read More

#1: Celebrating my Birthday!

In case you didn’t know, today is my 40th birthday. And I have had a great time with my “40 days of fun” leading up to it. Today is my last post and there were many fun things in my day: 1. Battlestar Galactica (the re-imagined series). I was able to watch an episode of BSG while working out on the elliptical trainer this morning. I love BSG and glad […] Read More

#2: Sunrises and Ice Skating

I wanted to get in watching a sunrise before my “40 days” were up so after having breakfast with my Wednesday morning breakfast friend we headed up to the 17th floor of her apartment building to watch the sunrise. She had to leave early but I stayed to watch the whole thing. It takes a long time for the sun to rise but it’s a tranquil experience to stop and […] Read More

#3: Writing letters to my family

I came up with this idea while I was brainstorming “fun” things and I wanted to make sure I did this before my “40 days” were up.  Today I wrote a separate letter to each person in my immediate family (including me).  I wanted to encourage my family and let them know how much I love them.  And I wrote myself a letter to remind me of the things I […] Read More

#4.5: New Year’s Party

For the past three years my husband and I have brought in the New Year at friends of ours.  It’s always a good time and last night did not disappoint.  We ate great food, played games like ‘Mafia’ and ‘Guesstures’, shared about 2012 highlights, and sang karaoke.  It was so much fun!  Thank you to the house of Jones for another awesome party!

#4: Reading a book all day long

I haven’t sat down and read a book all day long in quite some time (it gets more difficult when you have children). For most of today (besides a few tasks and a number of interruptions from my children) I read the book “A Year of Biblical Womanhood” by Rachel Held Evans. I started this morning and am almost halfway through. It’s a fun and interesting read. A writer embarked […] Read More

#5: Watch a classic movie

I enjoy watching classic movies. My two favorite classics are “Ben-Hur” and “Gone with the Wind“. Today I watched “Ben-Hur” with a couple of my children. What a great story! I love watching it every time.
